The World’s Original Superfood: An Ayurvedic Perspective
Today, when we talk about ‘superfoods,’ we usually focus on the newest trends. However, the real foundation for long life and health was established thousands of years ago in the Vedic tradition. Ayurveda introduces us to somaras, the sacred nectars that support both body and spirit. Of all these, one recipe stands out: Chyvanprash.
In this article, Mas Vidal looks at the ancient roots of this ‘Maha Rishi’ jam and explains why this medicinal fruit paste is still considered the world’s original and most powerful superfood for boosting immunity and renewing cells.
The Vedic Origins of the Superfood Concept
The idea of “superfoods” can be traced back to ancient Ayurvedic traditions. The contemporary notion of superfoods, or somaras, is believed to have originated in northern Vedic India, where these foods were both revered and integrated into sacred practices.
Commonly used foods include powdered herbal tonics like brahmi, ashwagandha, and amalaki; ghee blended with herbs (gritha); shilajit resin; black salt; and chyvanprash.
The latter is a medicinal fruit jam named after a prominent yogi, formulated by combining approximately fifty-two different herbs and spices, honey, and ghee.
There is no more superb food that exists today that can compare to this ancient jam recipe for increasing immunity and longevity.
Chyvanprash: The Ancient Medicinal Jam for Longevity
Chyvanprash (Ayurvedic health supplement) is arguably India’s most famous medicinal superfood and is regularly consumed by many families across the country to maintain good health.
The Charaka Samhita, Ayurveda’s earliest text from 100-200 BCE, describes a superfood recipe based on amla (Indian Gooseberry), containing 41 herbs, 7 spices, ghee, rock sugar, honey, and sesame oil. This formula likely predates the text and may have been used for centuries.
The Legend of Sage Chyvan and the Divine Healers
The Mahabharata and Puranas mention this superfood formula, originally made for the sage Chyvan, a Maha Rishi (great saint or seer). This special paste was created by the Ashwini Kumars, the twin physicians, the sons of the Sun God, Surya.
This paste was given to Sage Chyvan because the Ashwini twins were very impressed by the devotion offered to the sage by his wife Sukanya, a princess who was much younger than Sage Chyvan. He had lost his vision because of an accidental prank by Sukanya when they first met.
The celestial healers, being enthralled by the attractive princess and knowing that the Sage was much older than his wife, enticed her by offering to restore the youth of her husband. Although it was a mischievous proposal, it required that Sage Chyvan bathe in the river with the Ashwini twins.
Sage Chyvan agreed, since the offer was being presented by the physicians of the Gods, he felt he had nothing to lose.
Before dipping into the river with the twins, Sage Chyvan was given a spoonful of this medicinal jam, and the three of them dipped into the river together. As they suddenly rose out of the water, they appeared identical to each other, which forced Sukanya to choose her real husband from among the three of them.
Fortunately, her prayers to the Divine in the form of Bhagwati Jagadamba had developed her feeling capacity of discernment (viveka) and she was able to choose her real husband.
Thanks to the blessings of the Aswini twins and his consumption of a rejuvenating paste, he regained a youthful physique. This special concoction, later named chyvanprash, was created from that fortunate event.
